Many of the tools will be for molecular biology.
But to get this page started, there is a link to a character string splitter which I scripted to help with several different tasks.
The page will be developed with links to on-line utilities around the internet, some of my own, to some handy free software you can download for off-line work, and to a page or two I intend to write giving some practical tips, tricks and scripts.
Some of mine
- Splitter: Split one or a set of many character strings at a chosen position from the left or right ends.

Useful Software
- Text editors I would not be without:
- NoteTab Light is the free version of NoteTab. NoteTab is like a Swiss army knife text editor. Without using any of the bells and whistles available, it is still far superior to the notepad which comes with Windows. Several years ago I upgraded to the pro version, not because I felt I needed the additional power, but because I really wanted to reward the software developer. Something I use a lot in NoteTab is the find and replace via regular expression. I hope to give some examples when I work on tips and tricks.
- jEdit: Another great text editor especially good for scripting (html, css, php...) with regular expression capabilities and plug-ins to suit several needs.
- Hugin - Panorama photo stitcher: "an easy to use cross-platform panoramic imaging toolchain based on Panorama Tools."
- Do you want to get detailed data about the photographs and movies you downloaded from a digital camera? Is MS Windows explorer telling you the date you copied an avi file from a camera, but you can't get it to show the original date? You need to access the Exchangeable Image file Format (EXIF) data. Here are a couple of options:
Life Sciences
Species
- Encyclopedia of Life : "The Encyclopedia of Life (EOL) began in 2007 with the bold idea to provide 'a webpage for every species.'"
- Species 2000: "The goal of the Species 2000 project is to create a validated checklist of all the world's species (plants, animals, fungi and microbes)."
- Animal Diversity: "Animal Diversity Web (ADW) is an online database of animal natural history, distribution, classification, and conservation biology at the University of Michigan."
